Scoliosis & Congenital Spine Deformities

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that can occur at any age but is most commonly seen in adolescents. It may appear as one shoulder or one hip being higher than the other, or as prominence of the back on one side. Although scoliosis does not usually cause pain, neurologic dysfunction, or respiratory problems, it is important to see a specialist if scoliosis is found during a pediatric screening exam.

In some cases, scoliosis will progress over time. For this reason, it should be watched closely during a child’s rapid growth years -- usually in adolescence. When detected early, the majority of children with scoliosis typically only require frequent observation of the condition, while some may occasionally need bracing. A very small percentage of children will require surgery. Learn more about scoliosis from the Scoliosis Research Society.

Dr. Philip Anson has been treating scoliosis and spinal deformities in the Portland area since 1984. He has received additional training from the British National Health Service, in both Southampton and Nottingham, and he is a deformity consultant for the Spina Bifida Clinic at Maine Medical Center.

As a member of the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital pediatric orthopedics team, Dr. Anson works closely with James Wilson M.D., Maine’s only pediatric neurosurgeon, providing surgical care for severe spinal deformities in both children and adults.
